Text: Richard Grant Ellsworth, our beloved father, grandfather and great-grandfather, died surrounded by his loved ones on July 21, 2011 at the age of 84. He was born July 11, 1927 in Salt Lake City.He was the oldest son of Adelaide Grant and German Smith Ellsworth.He enlisted in the US Navy during WWII and thereafter served a mission to Sweden. He attended Brigham Young University where he received BA and MA degrees in English and the University of Maryland where he received a Ph.D in American Civilization. He taught at BYU for over 31 years, active in his profession, publishing and editing numerous articles and books. But Dad loved best being a teacher. Richard married his sweetheart, Betty Lola Midgley, in the Salt Lake Temple June 3, 1949. Dad and Mom were married for 62 years.They loved each other and their family with all their hearts. Together they taught the restored gospel by word and example. They were together in everything. Together they served five full-time missions. Together they served as ordinance workers in the Provo Temple, and Dad as a sealer, for 27 years. They are the parents of 8 children: Richard (Emily), Madelyn (Joseph) Fedor, Barbara (Ron) Lowry, Joseph (Rebecca), Carolyn (Mark) Yenchik, Elizabeth (Hilton) Ripplinger, James (Nan), and Christina (Duane) Degn.They have 43 grandchildren and 27 great-grandchildren.
