Text: John Samuel Swopes was born to Harrison Wesley Swopes and Mary Emma Gilmore 03 Nov 1895, Indian Territory, Oklahoma, the eldest of four children. He had three younger sisters all born between 1897 and 1900. The family moved around from place to place: Oklahoma, Missouri, New Mexico and Texas.
John Samuel Swopes married Otha Maberry 24 Dec 1915 in Melrose, New Mexico. John registered for the U S WWI Draft 31 May 1917; at that time he was married but he had no children. He and Otha were living in Amarillo, Texas at the time he registered. Between 1918 and 1921 two daughters and one son were born to them. The family was living in Wapato, Yakima County, Washington at the 1920 census. The marriage ended abt 1922; Otha married William Russel Badgley in 1923.
Following the end of his first marriage, John Samuel Swopes changes his name to John Samul. Records from the period following that event are all in his new name. He married 03 Sep 1924 in Idaho to the widow Mary Maloney Walter. One daughter and one son were born to them between 1926 and 1929.
John Samul registered for the U S WWII Draft in 1942 under the name John Samul. He was living in Bonners Ferry, Boundary County, Idaho at the time and was employed at a lumber camp.
John Samul died in Jan 1970. His original grave marker gave his name as John Samul but has since been replaced with a new one that states his given name: John Samuel Swopes.
